Golden Turmeric Latte Recipe
An easy vegan drink idea, this Golden Turmeric Latte is a warm, warmly spiced plant-based drink made with turmeric, cinnamon, ginger and a touch of maple syrup. It is creamy, bright and soothing, with a beautiful golden color and a cinnamon-dusted finish that makes it just right for a quiet morning, afternoon break or evening cup.
Servings: 2 small lattes | Prep Time: 5 minutes | Cook Time: 8 minutes
Ingredients
2 cups (480 ml.) unsweetened plain oat milk, almond milk or coconut milk beverage
1 tsp. ground turmeric
½ tsp. ground cinnamon, plus more for serving
¼ tsp. ground ginger
⅛ tsp. ground cardamom, optional
Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
Pinch of fine sea salt
1 to 2 tbsp. (15 to 30 ml.) maple syrup, to taste
½ tsp. vanilla extract
For Serving
Ground cinnamon
2 cinnamon sticks, optional
2 whole star anise, optional
Directions
Add the plant milk, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, black pepper and salt to a small saucepan.
Warm over medium-low heat for 6 to 8 minutes, whisking often, until the latte is hot, smooth and deeply golden. Do not let it boil.
Whisk in the maple syrup and vanilla. Taste and adjust with more maple syrup, if desired.
For a smoother latte, strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a heatproof measuring cup.
Pour into 2 mugs. Dust the tops with cinnamon and garnish each mug with a cinnamon stick or star anise, if using.
Serve warm.
Make It Yours
For a richer latte, use canned light coconut milk for half of the plant milk.
For a more pronounced spice flavor, simmer the latte with 1 cinnamon stick and 1 whole star anise, then strain before serving.
For a less sweet version, start with 1 tsp. (5 ml.) maple syrup and add more only if needed.
For an iced golden latte, let the mixture cool completely, then pour over ice and stir well before serving.
Kitchen Notes
The black pepper is added in a very small amount and should not make the latte taste peppery. It helps round out the turmeric and gives the drink a little more depth.
Oat milk gives this latte a creamy, smooth texture and helps create the look shown in the photo. Almond milk will be lighter, while coconut milk beverage will taste slightly richer.
Whisking while the latte heats helps prevent the spices from settling at the bottom of the pan. Straining is optional, but it gives the drink a cleaner, café-style finish.
Pairs Well With
Serve this latte with oatmeal, banana bread, baked apples, date bars, granola, almond butter toast or a small bowl of coconut yogurt with fruit.
